| Use: | L-Carnosine, or β-alanyl-L-histidine, is a dipeptide composed of β-alanine and histidine, which exists in high concentrations in vertebrate brain and skeletal muscle tissue. Carnosine has antioxidant properties and is a natural antioxidant. Carnosine has been shown to clear reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as alpha-beta unsaturated aldehydes formed by cell membrane fatty acid peroxidation during oxidative stress. Carnosine is also a zwitterion, a neutral molecule with positive and negative electrodes. Like carnitine, carnosine is formed from the root word carn, meaning meat, alluding to its ubiquity in animal proteins. The diet of vegetarians (especially vegans) lacks sufficient carnosine compared to the standard diet. |
